Surf report
8-08-07
The sand crabs are plentiful as well as the baitfish and contrary to what you might think the surf fly fishing has been slow with all of the bait in the water. It often seems that fly fishing the surf is more productive in the fall, spring and winter when bait is scarce and the fish will hammer the fly vs. the dog days of summer. The corbina are there as well as the perch and halibut. Getting them to be a regular catch has been challenging per most of the reports we are getting. This means that early AM is critical and the bite will probably shut down as soon as the sun rises.
Per the previous update if the waves are very low and everything is calm go with 4x (7lb.) flouro tippet and a 12-15' leader. They are a pain to cast but can increase your catch rate. If there is wave action then shorten up the leader. Also don't be afraid to cast into a calm pool and just wait. This lets the corbina settle down and forget about your cast ... and then strip in 30 seconds later (provided the line isn't being washed around). Also don't walk into the water. Stay on the sand if possible. Most corbina are caught in dim light when they don't know you are there.

San Diego Bay report
8-08-07
The bay has been fishing well and the fish are spread out all over. The north bay holds alot of the south bay fish during the summer's warm water season. Don't be surprised to find bonefish cruising the coves and docks of the north bay. A bonefish was recently caught on the fly on the south side of the Zuniga Jetty (open ocean).
